Infectious diseases expert is director of QTHA

Professor Louis Schofield has been appointed as the foundation Director of the Queensland Tropical Health Alliance.

Louis is an International Research Scholar of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and co-founder of Ancora Pharmaceuticals Inc.  He shares the Directorship of QTHA with his ongoing research work at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.

Professor Sandra Harding, Vice Chancellor of James Cook University where QTHA is headquartered says, "we are delighted that Louis Schofield has accepted the Directorship of QTHA.  He is a world class researcher across a wide range of fields and has connections with research institutes and funding organisations across the world."

A recognised authority in the immunology and pathogenesis of infectious diseases, Louis has research programs covering basic molecular sciences, product development and commercialisation, epidemiology and public health.

He brings to the appointment a wealth of funding from sources including the Gates Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization, the National Health and Medical Research Council and the European Union.

His approach to malaria has resulted in promising vaccine development programs and he is involved in clinical trials in Papua New Guinea and Africa.

Professor Peter Andrews, former Queensland Chief Scientist, says "QTHA provides a vehicle to bring together researchers across Queensland in the search for tropical health solutions.  Queensland provides a strong base for this initiative, given its tropical location and environments that are subject to endemic and epidemic tropical and emerging diseases."

QTHA's activities are focussed on three research themes: Drugs, Diagnostics & Vaccines; Indigenous Health, and Disease Surveillance and Control.

In taking up his role of Director, Louis says, "I look forward to working with our partners - James Cook University, the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Griffith University and Queensland University of Technology - and with our collaborators and funders, to fulfil the ambitions of the QTHA and improve health outcomes for all in the tropics."
